Meet Maggie

Maggie Aupperlee, Pittsburgh nonprofit marketer

Other Press Clips and Copywriting

This year, I tried something new. In addition to my nonprofit clients, I represented my first artist. Andrea’s striking portraits were featured both in 937 Gallery in Downtown Pittsburgh and as public art in the windows of storefronts at Penn and Centre Avenues in East Liberty.

I also work with the American Dairy Association North East. While most of my work surrounds their Fuel Up to Play 60 partnership with the National Football League, I am occasionally asked to secure other media placements in Pittsburgh and in other ADANE territory. I also secure television news coverage for Fuel Up to Play 60 events, but those clips aren’t readily available online.

Recent Press Clips – Tree Pittsburgh

For Tree Pittsburgh, I do it all. I serve as webmaster, marketing coordinator, social media manager, and press relations (and squirrel mascot wrangler, but that’s another story for another time).

This year’s press strategy was two-fold: to continue to emphasize the canopy loss reported in 2018, and to capitalize on any opportunities to feature the organization’s new energy efficient campus located on the Allegheny River.

April 23 – Free tree seedlings offered in Pittsburgh on Arbor Day – Tribune-Review

May 7 – Allderdice students plant trees in memory of Tree of Life victims – Tribune-Review

June 26 – Tree Pittsburgh branches out with artist residency – WESA

June 30 – North America’s largest moth, cecropia, at Tree Pittsburgh and elsewhere – Tribune-Review

July 4 – Art that grows awareness and appreciation for trees – Allegheny Front

September 19 – Tree Pittsburgh fights canopy loss with sapling giveaways – WESA’s The Confluence

Happy Anniversary

Happy Fifth Anniversary, Pittsburgh.

city smallerFive years ago, I moved from my parents house in Greensburg to start a new adventure with PULSE. I’d considered moving to Cleveland for graduate school, or North Carolina for a year of service.

Instead I found myself moving just an hour away, to live in a house with seven other incredible women in a big old house in the East End to volunteer and explore Pittsburgh. Since then, I’ve managed to stay within a mile and a half of that big old house, still working with nonprofits and still in love with the Steel City.

The traditional fifth anniversary gift is wood. How convenient that I work with Tree Pittsburgh! Our big benefit, Arbor Aid, is back September 26. Celebrate my 5th Burghiversary along the Allegheny River with me?

Good for her

GOODHave you ever found yourself scrolling your News Feed only to see the words “I’m so happy to announce…” and your automatic reaction is an eye roll? Or a look of disgust?

We’ve all been there.

I recently met a new group of friends as part of the Pittsburgh Feminist Book Club, which I shamelessly invited myself to via Twitter. My first meeting (the group’s third) was for the discussion of Amy’s book Yes Please.

Overall, I thought the book was great. Not the greatest book I’ve ever read, but as an Amy/SNL/Parks and Recreation fan, it had plenty of fodder and stories for me.

My favorite quote from the book, and one I discussed with my new friends at the PFBC was, “Good for her, not for me.” As a woman in a very different stage in my life than many of my friends, this little knowledge nugget (is that weird?) really resonates.

Women are raised to see each other as competition. I fall into this trap sometimes, but it’s such crap. In the workplace a bit of jealousy and comparison can motivate us. Outside in the real world, it’s a toxic move. Looking at another woman’s life and thinking, “gosh, I wish I had that” only makes us forget about what we’ve got. And chances are what we’ve got is pretty good.

That’s why I love Amy’s quote. I’m friends with some pretty remarkable women, so good things come up in my News Feed a lot. But my friends have all taken different paths since our college (or high school) days, and that’s okay. Their happy announcements wouldn’t fit into my life right now, and vice versa.

So next time you’re scrolling Facebook and see an announcement post, just remember: that new job/boyfriend/wedding/baby is good for her, not for me.

Numero Uno

I’ve been sitting on this post because let’s face it – the first post is the hardest. This will forever be my first post, and I can’t take the pressure.

So, happy first post to you all. Come back soon for baking, knitting, thoughts on being a woman, thoughts on my field, and the occasional fun dance song. Because I like to dance.

Buckle up, friends. I’m blogging again.
